Influence of Blood Collection Systems on Coagulation Tests
نویسندگان
چکیده
OBJECTIVE Coagulation tests are influenced by pre-analytic conditions such as blood collection systems. Change of glass collection tubes with plastic ones will cause alteration of the test results. The aim of this study was to compare three plastic blood collection tubes with a standard glass blood collection tube and each plastic collection tube with the other two for possible additional tube-to- tube differences. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 284 blood samples were obtained from 42 patients receiving warfarin during their routine controls, besides 29 healthy volunteers. Subgroup analyses were done according to health status. RESULTS Our study demonstrated that different blood collection tubes have a statistically significant influence on coagulation tests. The magnitude of the effect depends on the tube used. However most of the tests performed on samples obtained from any tube correlated significantly with results obtained from other tube samples. CONCLUSION Although blood collection tubes with different brands or properties will have distinct effects on coagulation tests, the influence of these blood collection tubes may be relatively small to interfere with decision-making on dose prescription, therefore lack clinical importance. Correlations between the results showed that, one of these plastic blood collection tubes tested in our study, can be used interchangably for a wide variety of coagulation assays. CONFLICT OF INTEREST None declared.

Background and Aim: In cases under heparin therapy, frequent blood samples must be taken for coagulation tests. Therefore, samples from saline lock can be a useful means to decrease the pain of taking frequent blood samples. The purpose of this study was to find the effect of this method on the validity of coagulation tests results. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study a con...
متن کاملPre-analytical issues in the haemostasis laboratory: guidance for the clinical laboratories
Ensuring quality has become a daily requirement in laboratories. In haemostasis, even more than in other disciplines of biology, quality is determined by a pre-analytical step that encompasses all procedures, starting with the formulation of the medical question, and includes patient preparation, sample collection, handling, transportation, processing, and storage until time of analysis. This s...
متن کاملCould light meal jeopardize laboratory coagulation tests?
BACKGROUND Presently the necessity of fasting time for coagulation tests is not standardized. Our hypothesis is that this can harm patient safety. This study is aimed at evaluating whether a light meal (i.e. breakfast) can jeopardize laboratory coagulation tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS A blood sample was firstly collected from 17 fasting volunteers (12 h). Immediately after blood collection, t...
متن کاملAn Overview on Platelet-derived Microparticles in Platelet Concentrates: blood collection, method preparation and storage
Preparations of platelet concentrates (PCs) that are stored under blood bank conditions and used for transfusion purposes, appear to be enriched in platelet derived-microparticles (PMPs) with high coagulant activity that may change platelet efficacy and safety issues. High shear stress could cause shedding of PMPs from the platelet plasma membrane, platelet aggregation, and activation of the co...
متن کامل[The importance of preanalytics for the coagulation laboratory].
Due to their complex preanalytics coagulation tests show a higher rate of rejected samples due to insufficient quality and a higher intra- and inter-individual test variability. In the last years several guidelines addressed this issue in an effort to standardize preanalytic procedures. However, in daily laboratory work, these guidelines frequently cannot be fully executed, due to technical lim...
